Crested Butte is home to Colorado's best mountain biking and the sport's history is embraced here. New to the area? Try the mellow Lower Loop. Looking for a bit more of a biking challenge? It's here, too.
How ingrained in the sporting fabric of Crested Butte is mountain biking? Well, they have a museum dedicated to the sport here. The Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and Museum, located in Crested Butte, was founded in 1988 to chronicle the history of fat tire riding. Since its creation almost thirty years ago, mountain biking has grown immensely and the Hall of Fame at 331 Elk Avenue houses hundreds of items of memorabilia, including vintage bikes, components, classic photos, press clippings and highlights from historic races and events. And if museums are cool but boring compared to a ride on a gritty mountain road, check out the upcoming Fat Tire Bike Week June 18-22, not to mention a gamut of events tailored to gearheads throughout the summer. For more information and a complete schedule, including times, contact the Crested Butte-Mt. Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce at (800) 545-4505 or visit http://www.ftbw.com.
Rental shops dot Crested Butte and Gunnison. You can get everything from bikes to trail maps, and proprietors can hook you up with routes for short rides through town, or longer, more grueling trips that can last the whole day.
