Take a Chair in Jackson Hole

JacksonHole_tram.jpg

Jackson Hole is a natural arena of activities that have drawn people in search of a challenge or their own personal limits since the mountain men held their first rendezvous here. Spring thaw brings modern day mountain men down to the Teton County Fairgrounds for a reenactment of those early gatherings.

"Big Red," the distinctive Jackson Hole Aerial Tram has ceased operation and plans for a new, larger tramway from the base of Teton Village to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain are underway. While this oft-photographed icon is out of service there are options. Take the Grand Targhee Scenic Chairlift (800-827-4433), a four-person high-speed detachable lift that goes to the 10,000-foot summit (gains 2,000 feet vertical). It runs from early June to Labor Day. You can ride, mountain bike or hike down. And then there's the Snow King Resort Scenic Chairlift (307-733-5200), a scenic double chair ride to the top of the mountain, lifting riders from an elevation of 6,180 feet to 7,751 feet in a mere 20 minutes. The season typically runs Memorial Weekend through early or mid-September. You can ride, mountain bike or hike down. They're the black chairlift on the right side of Snow King Mountain, six blocks south of the Jackson Town Square.
