The four 18-hole championship golf courses, all designed by owner Ron Otto, cut through a landscape dotted with pine, hardwoods, and numerous small lakes and streams. Water comes into play on more than half the holes. The Fountains: Fountains, the newest of the four courses, opened in 1995. This 6,800-yard course is a match for its beautiful setting. Doug Grove, head golf professional at Garland Resort, notes that this course is loaded with water challenges; it has water on nine of its holes, mainly sparkling ponds enhanced by fountains. The course features a six-pack of par-5s, par-4s and par-3s; six of each. Rating 73; Slope 130. Swampfire: Opened in 1987, it was the first of the four Otto- designed courses. A round of 18 on this course will require patience and precision as all but four of the holes have water hazards. This course will be a true assessment of your shot-making ability. Rating 73.9; Slope 138. Monarch: Built in 1990, it is one of Michigan's longest golf courses; a formidable 7,188 yards from the back tees. But despite the length from the tips and the streams, ponds and lakes found on 14 of the 18 holes, this is one course that particularly appeals to women. The forward tees are set at 4,904 yards; rating 75.6, Slope 140. It's also one of Michigan's toughest rated courses. The Reflections: This course, also designed by Otto and built in 1992, is one of the favorite courses at Garland, in part because it's the shortest course and also because its lush fairways meander through a forest of majestic pines; rating 70.6, Slope 127. The lodging and cuisine match the resort's four-star rating. Garland offers a wide array of golf packages and specializes in packages to attract couples. Home of the largest log lodge east of the Mississippi, Garland is one of the few four-star rated resorts in the Midwest. It specializes in luxurious surroundings, beautiful golf courses, and pampering its guests.
