Steam Train Festival

Rail service over and through the Swiss Alps: 125 years and still going.

This year marks the 125th Anniversary of the Gotthard Railway, and includes a Steam Train Festival on June 1 and 2. Traveling on a steam train from Bellinzona over the Gotthard Pass and on to Erstfeld is bound to be an unforgettable experience. For the complete effect, steam engines will be pulling period cars with class compartments, and at the village of Göschenen there will be a soup stop. It will give you a chance to stretch and get a good look at the mythical landscape.

To save your legs for another time, you can also hop a train from Lucerne to Engelberg to go up Mt. Titlis, where you can soar over the spectacular glacier in Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car. From its over 9,000 foot vantage, you can see as far as the Black Forest of Germany.
