Crested Butte, the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, pays homage to that title with the 23rd annual Wildflower Festival, which takes place in the charming, historic town July 6-12.
Crested Butte Mountain Resort is offering lodging for the festival that starts at $70 per person, per night, based on double occupancy, and includes one free lift ride per person. Daily shuttles connect the resort and town, a quick downhill, three-mile ride away.
The festival began in 1986 through the efforts of a few Crested Butte locals who envisioned a wildflower celebration in this beautiful valley. A few years later, the mayors of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte went to the Colorado State Senate and got them to proclaim the town as the "Wildflower Capital of Colorado," an official state designation.
The festival has grown into a week-long celebration with nearly 200 classes and workshops in botany, crafts, photography, gardening, art, flower arranging, cooking, and more. By mid-July and well into the month of August, the entire valley is painted with vivid floral displays.
To partake of the panorama of wildflowers throughout the area festival organizers have arranged guided hikes that range from easy to technical, bike rides and yoga classes among alpine meadows, 4x4 tours into the backcountry, and garden tours of historic Crested Butte.
