The Southwest is home to two of the 20 World Heritage sites in the United States, and fall is a good time of year to visit the Four Corners Region and enjoy exploring these incredible cultural gems. including the hand-hewn cliff dwellings of the ancient Puebloan people known as the Anasazi.
Gateway Reservations, the booking arm of the Durango Area Tourism Office, is offering a four-night package, which starts from around $112 per person, per day, depending on choice of lodging. This package offers a unique and in-depth understanding of the exceptional and distinctive cultural heritage of the Southwest.
The first couple of days are spent exploring World Heritage sites Mesa Verde National Park, home to the largest cliff dwellings in North America, and Chaco Canyon National Historical Park, a major center of the Anasazi culture between 850 and 1250 AD. A third day is spent exploring the Ute Mountain Tribal Park on horseback. National Geographic calls this site "one of the most undiscovered and unexplored system of ruins in the U.S." A scenic, historic ride on the Durango & Silverton Railroad is a possible option on the third day if two days of exploring ancient ruins are enough.
The package includes four nights in Durango with a choice of lodging options and full day guided tours of the historic parks and archaeological site. It includes all park fees, lunch, and hotel pick-up and drop-off. This is a great tour for the months of September and October as the heat of summer begins to wane. For the history buff, this is a must. You will be fascinated.
