West Virginia's Pocahontas County mountain country has earned a reputation among motorcycle enthusiasts for offering some of the finest motorcycle touring in the eastern United States. West Virginia's Route 39, which crosses through the county, is "one of the top 25 routes in the U.S.," according to Rider Magazine. The mountains are lush and beautiful in the summertime. As John Denver so aptly said, "almost heaven."
Motorcyclists should make plans to head for the Mountain State, July 16-19, for the ninth annual Snowshoe Mountain Freedom Fest. It's considered West Virginia's premier all-brands touring rally. Riders who book three nights' lodging from July 15-20 will receive a fourth night free during Freedom Fest.
During the festival riders use Snowshoe as a base camp for exploring the region. The rolling highways are legendary to biking enthusiasts. Guides are available, through organized rides, to take you through the curves and dips of the mountains and show you the spectacular vistas of Pocahontas County. There are also hiking and whitewater rafting tours available.
Live concerts are scheduled during the festival, featuring the all-female country band Cowboy Crush Friday night, and country singer/guitarist Trent Tomlison Saturday night. The Friday concert is $15 and Saturday is $25 per ticket, or both concerts are $30 per ticket.
Best of all, riders have a chance to cash-in on one of the richest poker runs in the state. One biker will walk away from the Freedom Fest Poker Run with a $10,000 purse. That's a reason to hop on your bike and head out on the highway. Another is the great scenery you will see. It's one spectacular mountain vista after another.
