All summer Taos has been celebrating the '60s along with the 40th anniversary of the release of Easy Rider. The hugely successful movie was filmed partly in Taos and starred Dennis Hopper, who now lives in Taos.
One major event remains as the Taos Summer of Love 2009 rolls towards its September close: the Luv Train, which departs Aug. 23 from Chama, New Mexico, some 95 miles west of Taos -- destination: the '60s. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's special Luv Train will lumber up through Colorado's 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass and back, entertaining passengers with '60s music, poetry readings, and a costume contest for "best-dressed luv child." Tickets are $59 for adults, $29 for kids. The trip takes four hours.
Back in Taos, keep on trippin' at the Stewart House Bed and Breakfast, a colorful, one-of-a-kind lodging out in the wide open spaces on the edge of Taos Pueblo lands, sitting amid sculptures and flowerbeds. North of Taos on the road to Taos Ski Valley, the complex of timbered structures was built by hand by local artist Charles Stewart as a home for him and his wife, Mary Lou, as well as a gathering place for Southwest artists.
The Stewart House is offering 50 percent off the third night after a two-night stay on weekends and a third night free when staying for two nights mid-week. These specials continue until the opening of ski season around Thanksgiving. Room rates start at $65 a night; the Barn, a two-bedroom guesthouse with kitchen that sleep up to eight people is $175 a night and has a three-night minimum.

Stay at a funky b&b and take a ride Aug. 23 on the Luv Train from Chama, New Mexico, to Cumbress Pass, Colorado, to recapture the '60s and help Taos celebrate its Summer of Love 2009.
