White-Knuckle Whitewater Rafting in Taos

Details

Description

Be it whitewater rafting in the world-famous Taos Box, or a tranquil float through the spectacular scenery of the Chama and Rio Grande, New Mexico's rivers have it all.

Los Rios River Runners (800 544-1181) offer half day, full day, and overnight river rafting trips, close to Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. Native Sons Adventures (800 753-7559) offer whitewater rafting, kayaking tours on the area's wildest or most tranquil stretches of river. Their rafting tour is great for groups and families seeking moderate adventure. Paddlers work together to negotiate boulder mazes, waves, drops and chutes. Trips leave twice a day from the Rio Grande Gorge Vistors Center 15 miles south of Taos. New Wave Rafting Co. (800 984-1444) starts their season with the first rush of snowmelt water, in late April. This is the beginning of the "white knuckles" boating season, with big waves, fast water and lots of action, lasting usually through mid-summer. Air and water temperatures, initially cool, warm rapidly, with summer heat arriving by late May. Declining water levels in mid-summer usher in a playful "sporting" season, with smaller rafts and funyaks able to play among the boulders. Swimming, raft surfing and other activities make this time of year the most fun for families.
