Taos Pueblo (505 758-1028) is the only Native American Community designated as both a World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark. Once you see it you'll know why.
Listen to the walls. Home to native peoples for more than 1,000 years, this complex compound of multi-storied, multi-purpose buildings was raised as a means of defense. Visitors must have permission to enter and the Pueblo is closed every March and April. There is a fee charged for entry as well as to take pictures. The Pueblo is currently home to about 50 people. It is not a museum, nor is it a historical recreation so it is wise to tread lightly and make sure you know the rules before visiting. Small shops around the Pueblo can accommodate your need for a souvenir but bring cash as most of these shops do not accept credit cards. While interesting at any time, the Pueblo is most captivating during one of the many religious ceremonies and dances held there throughout the year. These are often open to the public, but photography is not allowed.
